Boldly to the Throne

Hebrews 4:16(NKJV)
Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 10:19-20(NKJV)
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus,
by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,

Boldness!  Now there is a word that many don't associate with being a Christian and it's a shame.  Why?  Because the Bible tells us to come boldly to the throne.

Why is that so hard to do?  Well I think one of the reason is that we don't feel worthy.  We know we are sinners and even though intellectually we know that once we have confessed our sins and asked for forgiveness God puts them in the past and doesn't see them anymore, it's hard for us to do the same.  Therefore it is hard for us to come boldly to the throne.

Using the God the Father view, look at it this way.  When we were kids and we knew we had screwed up, did we come boldly to our parents and tell them what we did?  I don't know about you but I sure didn't.  I came in meekly trying to show that I was really sorry.  (Sometimes I really was and sometimes I was just sorry I got caught, but that's being a kid!)

I think it is that human element that carries through and sometimes inhibits our relationship with God.  But the Bible is very clear.  Come boldly to the throne.  Now what does it mean to be bold exactly?

bold
[bohld]
adjective, -er, -est.
1.
not hesitating or fearful in the face of actual or possible danger or rebuff; courageous and daring: a bold hero.
2.
not hesitating to break the rules of propriety; forward; impudent: He apologized for being so bold as to speak to the emperor.
3.
necessitating courage and daring; challenging: a bold adventure.
4.
beyond the usual limits of conventional thought or action; imaginative: Einstein was a bold mathematician. a difficult problem needing a bold answer.
5.
striking or conspicuous to the eye; flashy; showy: a bold pattern.

As you read the definitions, don't the words evoke feelings of excitement and adventure?  Well guess what, that's what your life with Christ can be!

God has a plan for our lives and the thing about free will is that He will let us participate as much or as little as we would like.  Well if we have a choice let's be bold!  We serve a great God who can do great things though us, if we will only let Him.

So seek what God has planned for your lives and then be bold and dare great things for Him!

Keeping it simple!

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18(NKJV)
Rejoice always,
pray without ceasing,
in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Now here is a scripture to live by!

Nice and simple.  We spend a lot of time with God, studying scripture, looking for all sorts of deep life changing revelations in His word and it is good when we do that.  However sometimes it's nice to just focus on simpler things.

Imagine how good life could be if we would follow these 3 simple steps.

Rejoice always - Live life in a joyful and happy spirit.  You know people like that.  They always seem to be in a good mood.  They can always make people smile.  How do you get to be that way?  Make the decision and then practice it.

I've heard this quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln but I don't know for sure.  I just think it is a great quote.

"I imagine you'll be about as happy in life as you make up your mind to be."

I had a friend in high school who was like that.  You know, the kid that everyone liked.  Walking down the street he would say hi and smile at anyone and they would usually smile and say hi back.

God brought this to my attention way back then (around 9th or 10th grade) and inspired me to try and become more like my friend.  I started by just walking down the street in a different town and saying hi to people and smiling.  Even though I was a long hair hippie looking kid I found that I could get almost anyone to smile and say hi back.

Try this little experiment.  When you go through the drive thru, make it a point to look the person right in the eye and with a big smile wish them a great day or something like that.  You don't have to be weird about it or anything, just be genuine.  You'll be amazed at how you can get the grumpiest, surliest person to smile if you are genuine about it.

What a great yet simple way to be a blessing to others.

Now pray without ceasing.  If we pray without ceasing, how would we ever get anything else done?  Here's what pray without ceasing means to me.  For most of us, our major communication with God comes during "official" prayer time.  We check in and have our daily dialog with God and then we go about our day.

But what about the rest of the day?  Are we having a running dialog with God throughout the day?  To me that is what pray without ceasing means.  God goes from being who we check in with once a day to being our friend and mentor that we runs things by all day long.  Imagine how much better life could be if we talked to God all day long instead of just in the morning!

And finally in everything give thanks.  Be ever thankful to God.  Thank Him for all of the blessings He gives us in life but also be mature enough to be thankful for the challenges we face, acknowledging that the challenges in life are where we get our biggest opportunities for growth as Christian human beings.  This is usually the biggest part of my prayer time because I am just so blown away and thankful for all that God has done in my life.

Try memorizing this scripture and using it as your daily reminder of how to approach life for the next couple of weeks and see what type of difference it can make.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Nuggets of Wisdom

You ever notice how you can be reading through scripture when all of a sudden - Wham!  You read something that stops you in your tracks.  It just speaks to you.  It may be absurdly simple or elegantly profound but it speaks to you right then.

Is it that way every day?  Nope.  Sometimes it is a slog to get through my readings.  Sometimes I will read the same sentence over several times and have no more clue what it means than before I read it.  In those cases I pray for focus but if it doesn't come I just chalk it up to me not being ready to learn that particular lesson right now.  I have total confidence that God will reveal whatever I need to learn when He thinks I am ready to learn it.

And if we are being totally honest here, there are a couple of things that I find so tedious that I just blow through.  As an example, some of the genealogy listings in the early Old Testament I just don't see the point of reading.  It's just a list of names that is so strange that I am never going to remember them anyway.  I get the point that the lineage is important but I trust that God got all of the people in the correct order, I don't need the details.  Does that make me a bad person?  Tell me you've never done the same! LOL!

Anyway I digress.  What makes the daily walk so exciting is those little nuggets of wisdom we find along the way.  I'd like to share a couple that I ran across from 2 Timothy.

2 Timothy 1:5-7(NKJV)
when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Less than 100 words and yet two great nuggets!

Number one, a spirit of fear is not from God.  If we are living in fear we need to get focused on the Power of God.  It tells us very plainly that God has given us a spirit of power, love, and sound mind.  So pay attention to your spirit (and by extension your demeanor) throughout the day.  Are you exhibiting faith in the Power that God has given you?

Number two it talks about the need to stir up the gift of God.  That indicates that we have to be active in our pursuit of God’s power and guidance.  It’s not a passive thing.  One of the cool things about free will is that God doesn't force Himself on us.  He will reveal as much or as little about Himself as we seem to want.

One of the things about God's promises are that they are conditional.  If we do this for God, He will do that for us.  He clearly says that "if" we diligently seek him with "all our hearts, minds, and souls" He "will" reveal Himself to us.  Not "maybe", not "might if He feels like it"; He will!

So if you really want to experience the full Power of God then let Him know by being in the Word daily so that He can bless you with Nuggets of Wisdom!

Discernment - how do we get it and why do we want it?

What is discernment, how do we get it and why do we want it?

Let's start with the definition:
dis·cern·ment
[dih-surn-muh
nt, -zurn-]
noun
1.
the faculty of discerning; discrimination; acuteness of judgment and understanding.
2.
the act or an instance of discerning

That was helpful wasn't it?  So what is discerning?

dis·cern
[dih-surn, -zurn]
verb (used with object)
1.
to perceive by the sight or some other sense or by the intellect; see, recognize, or apprehend: They discerned a sail on the horizon.
2.
to distinguish mentally; recognize as distinct or different; discriminate: He is incapable of discerning right from wrong.

So essentially discernment helps us  guard against being led astray.  It helps us distinguish truth from lies.  Fact from fiction.  Right from wrong.  Let me give you and example from my reading today in Revelation.
------------------------
Revelation 13:1-3(NKJV)
1Then £I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having £seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a blasphemous name.
2Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority.
3And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast.

Revelation 13:11-14(NKJV)
11Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon.
12And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.
14And he deceives £those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived.
------------------------
Scripture tells us that in the end times there will be someone (the beast, the antichrist) who will be raised from the dead.  Many people will follow this person because of this "miracle".  Then there will be a second person who will be promoting the first.  He will be able to perform great signs.

It's pretty easy to see how someone with no discernment could easily be led astray by the two people described in Revelation.  For the casual observer it would probably seem perfectly logical that these two people are "special", etc.  They will be led astray because they don't have a basis from which to discern good from evil in this situation.

But those of us that have studied the Word will be able to discern the situation for what it really is!  We will be able to recognize that these two are not really from God and therefore we won't be lead astray or fooled.

How do we get discernment?  There are many ways that we build our knowledge on which our  discernment rests.  Our life experience, our reading, our schooling.  But the single most important place from which to draw our discernment in my opinion is God's word with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

God's word is full of wisdom and knowledge that can help guide us not only in extreme times like described in Revelation, but in our daily lives as we face all the normal challenges that humans face.  Try being in the Word daily and see how your discernment grows!

Music and Emotions

Isn't it amazing how quickly and deeply music can evoke emotions?  And how music can almost instantaneously transport us to different times in our lives?

My wife and I will sometimes play our own version of Name That Tune with our iPhones when we are traveling.  Play just the first few notes of a song and see if the other person can name it.    It just amazes me how the human mind can take the first few notes of a song and out of all of the songs that we have heard in our lives, our minds can instantly connect to the correct one.

I'm sure we have all experienced the way when a certain song comes on, no matter how we feel at the time, a smile just spreads across our face.  I have a whole playlist on my iPhone called Songs that make me go Yeah!  Great way to keep a smile on your face while you are running or biking.

I was reminded of this a couple of days ago when one of my favorite Christian songs came on while I was out for a late autumn bike ride.  It was a beautiful sunny day.  Around 65 degrees.  The colors were spectacular.  And when this song came on my heart soared.

Now I know that is a weird way to describe it but it is the only way that I can think of that really reflects the emotions that this song evokes.  This song almost always brings a tear (of joy and gratitude) to my eye and I can remember many times in the past when this song has unexpectedly come on and evoked the same emotions.  Once on a plane.  Once driving down the Pacific Coast Highway in California around Big Sur come to mind.

What is the song?  I Can Only Imagine by Mercyme

I Can Only Imagine

I can only imagine what it will be like, when I walk by Your side...
I can only imagine, what my eyes will see, when Your Face is before me!
I can only imagine. I can only imagine.

Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you, Jesus? Or in awe of You, be still?
Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing 'Hallelujah!'? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

I can only imagine, when that day comes, when I find myself standing in the Son!
I can only imagine, when all I will do, is forever, forever worship You!
I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

Yeah! I can only imagine!

Yeah! I can only imagine!

I can only imagine! Yeah! I can only imagine!! Only imagine!!!
I can only imagine.

I can only imagine, when all I do is forever, forever worship You!

What is it going to be like when we stand in front of Him?  I love the chorus:

Surrounded by Your Glory, what will my heart feel?
Will I dance for you, Jesus? Or in awe of You, be still?
Will I stand in Your presence, or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing 'Hallelujah!'? Will I be able to speak at all?
I can only imagine! I can only imagine!

How blown away are we going to be to finally be in God's presence?

I don't know if Steve Jobs (founder of Apple) was a Christian or not but I find his last words, as reported by his sister, interesting.  As he slipped from this life to the next, with his family surrounding him, his last words were "Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow!"

Now I've got to be honest with you.  We read in the Bible about how awesome Heaven is going to be, but I'm still not in a hurry to get there.  I always feel a bit bad saying that but come on, I'm human.  Right now I'd rather be here with my family.

But when the day comes that Jesus calls me home, how cool is it going to be?  I'll bet that "Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow!" might just about cover it!

Faith vs. Logic

I wrote a few days ago about end times prophesy and because I am reading Revelation right now we will be taking a look at end time prophecies from a different angle.

Revelation 11:1-6(NKJV)
1Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. £And the angel stood, saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there.
2But leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months.
3And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”
4These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the £God of the earth.
5And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner.
6These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.

Some interesting end times stuff that should be easy to spot.  As I have written here or elsewhere, end times prophesy to me seems to be of two kinds: the general that could be applied to almost any times (floods, earthquakes, wars, etc.) and specific like the two prophets that will spend 3.5 years prophesying in the courtyard in Jerusalem.  No one will be able to harm them.

It seems to me that that will be pretty hard to miss.  It’s also interesting to me the amount of power these two prophets will be given.

Revelation 11:7-13(NKJV)
7When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.
8And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also £our Lord was crucified.
9Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations £will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves.
10And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.
11Now after the three-and-a-half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them.
12And £they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they ascended to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies saw them.
13In the same hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of heaven.

When we see these two die, we know that the first 3.5 years is over.  Further proof.  We as Christians will know what to expect next while the rest of the world will be totally surprised.  What is amazing to me is that even after witnessing all of that, there will still be people that don’t believe.  Now here is the key question.  Is it real or is it a fairy tale?  Do I really expect it to happen like that?

Yes I do.  Because of the details in the verse, I do expect it to happen like that.  Why do I feel that way?  I don’t know.  For me personally, this is where one of those faith vs. logic things comes into play.

Do I believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God?  Without a doubt I do believe that.  But does that mean that every single word in there is infallible?  Could it be possible that because of the human writers and translators over the years, some things slipped in there that don't belong or aren't relevant?  I don't know but it seems possible to me.  Especially when you consider that the Catholic Church uses a Bible that is a bit different from the Protestant Church, and I believe that the Greek Orthodox Church uses a Bible that is a bit different than the other two.  And that possibility is what creates a question for many.  How do we know what is in the Bible is true?

Why am I raising this question?  It's what God prompted me to write about today and quite frankly it makes me very uncomfortable.  I am just a guy like anybody else.  No special training, just sharing my daily walk.  Even raising the questions seems to be almost sacrilegious and I don't mean it to be.

As I raise this questions I want to be perfectly clear on a couple of points.  First and foremost, when I ask a question like this it is from the standpoint that God is way smarter than me and knows what He is doing, I am the one that just doesn't get it.  I am just asking for God to help me understand.  Secondly, the questions I am talking about in no way challenge my overall faith. They are what I would call ancillary issues.  Not really important to the central issue of accepting Jesus as my Lord and Savior but still things that I read in the Bible that just make me go Hmm?

But on the other hand, we serve an intelligent God and we are told we are made in His image.  I don't think God expects us to just suspend our intellect when it comes to Him.  I don't even think He is offended when we ask a question of Him as long as we are asking with a true desire to learn His will.

So how do we tell?  For me it starts with faith.  I know for many, that is an unacceptable answer.  I understand.  We live in a data filled world and I am an analytical person so in any other part of my life that would be an unacceptable answer for me as well.

Fortunately for me I accepted Christ when I was in 8th grade so I've had many years to build my faith.  Does that mean that I've always walked with Christ all these years?  Not necessarily but what is cool is that even when I strayed, Christ walked with me and was always there ready to help if I would just place my faith in Him.

If you are already a Christian, take a minute to look back at the times in your life where you can see that your faith in Christ has been well placed.  Think about those times and see how God has made things happen in your life where you just go "God is so cool!".  Use those times to further build your faith.  Remember, your faith is like a muscle.  The more you use it the bigger it gets.

For those of you that have never had this experience I would encourage you to give it a try.  Take a leap of faith.  Accept Jesus into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior.  Then get into God's word and let the Holy Spirit guide you through the questions that you have.  If you are like me I think that you will find that the questions are pretty minor and that God will provide you with the answers you need as you are ready to receive them.  Pretty soon you too will be saying "God is so cool!"

How do you view God?

How do you view God?  What do I mean by that?  In your minds eye, how do you picture God?  What feelings do you feel as you think of Him?  When you think of God what is that first image of Him?

There are many different pictures of God in the Bible.

We have God the avenger

God the mighty

God the merciful

God the authoritarian

God the father.

How does your view of God affect your relationship with Him?

My view is of God the Father.  Why?  Not sure exactly.  I've shown above a bunch of different  examples of different views of God.  How did I settle on this one?  As I wonder about this I think the only real answer I can give is that it is the view that the Holy Spirit has given me to focus on.  Maybe to me it is the most comforting.

I'd love to hear what is the predominant view for others and how you came to that view.
