As I have pointed
out before, Jesus' ministry style was often confrontational with those who
weren't sincerely seeking. I believe
that one of the biggest problems in Christianity today is a watering down of
the message. Jesus didn't do that.
Take particular
notice of what Jesus doesn't do when His disciples point out that He offended
that Pharisees.
Matthew 15:1-9(NKJV)
Then the scribes and
Pharisees who were from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying,
“Why do Your
disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their
hands when they eat bread.”
He answered and said to
them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your
tradition?
For God commanded,
saying, ‘Honor your father and your
mother’; and, ‘He who curses father
or mother, let him be put to death.’
then he need not honor his father or
mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment
of God of no effect by your tradition.
‘These people draw
near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.
And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”
Matthew 15:10-15(NKJV)
When He had called
the multitude to Himself, He said
to them, “Hear and understand:
Not what goes into
the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”
Then His disciples came and said
to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this
saying?”
But He answered and
said, “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be
uprooted.
Let them alone. They
are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will
fall into a ditch.”
Then Peter answered
and said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.”
Here is what Jesus
didn't do. He didn't go "oh me oh
my, I've offended them. I better go
apologize". Nope, He didn't do
that.
Now some might say
"yeah but that is Jesus. He can
tell when someone is insincere or not.
We don't have the ability to decide that. That would be judgmental and we aren't
supposed to judge remember?".
I would
disagree. As I have pointed out in other
blog posts, Jesus also told us to make judgements in other parts of Scripture
and He instructed us on what to base those judgments on.
Besides, quite often
those asking the insincere questions have already made known that they have
rejected Christ and they are trying to influence others to reject Christ
also. In this case you aren't making a
judgment. They have told you straight up
that they have chosen to be enemies of God.
So should we soften the message to try and win them over as so many in
the Christian world would do today or should we respond to those people
following the example that Jesus set?
I don't know about
you but I think we should follow the example Jesus set!
