An Hour You Do Not Expect

This past week at church Pastor Beth did a sermon on signs.  Jesus tells  to watch for the signs and to be ready.

OK, that makes sense.  We should be aware of what is going on in the world and we need to keep our focus on God and Jesus.  Fair enough.  My problem with this is that many of the signs that we are told to watch for are so vague that you can see them all the time.

Now let's look at what else the Bible tells us about Jesus' return.

The first one that comes to mind, and I don't have the verse right in front of me but it is something to the effect that even Jesus doesn't know the exact time of His return.

Now couple that with this next verse and that leads me to a question.

Luke 12:40(NKJV)
40Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

What did this just tell us?  That Jesus will come at an hour we don't expect.  Really?  Then what is the point of watching for the signs?  Apparently all that watching isn't going to mean jack because Jesus is still going to come when we don't expect Him.  Is this contradictory?

I don't think so.  I just think it is another one of those the Bible is a book of balance things.   I think it is good to look for the signs in a general sense because it helps keep us focused on God.  However I think all of the people out there that spend their lives trying to pinpoint exactly when it is going to happen haven't been reading their Bible very well because they have dedicated their lives to something that God has already told them isn't going to happen.   They will be as surprised as everyone else when it happens!
