I love this passage
about us all having different gifts. I
would like to go in a slightly different direction here however.
The question I have
is this. Are our gifts the same
throughout our life and ministry?
1 Corinthians 12:4-11(NKJV)
There are
diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
There are
differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
And there are
diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.
But the
manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:
for to one is given
the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through
the same Spirit,
to another faith by
the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
to another the
working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to
another different kinds of tongues,
to another the interpretation of tongues.
But one and the same
Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He
wills.
I haven't found
anywhere in Scripture that addresses this yet but here is my view based on what
I have seen in my own life.
I believe that some
of our gifts change over time. Not all
but some. I think it is based on our
life's experiences. We may go through
something in life that all of a sudden gives us understanding or empathy that
we didn't have before. That
understanding or empathy can lead us to discover new gifts. Does that make sense?
Now to argue the
other side it is possible that you always had that gift, you just hadn't
recognized it yet. Sort of a which came
first, the chicken or the egg scenario.
Hmm, something to ponder!
