"That none may perish"…can Peter back this up with Scripture?

I have written in the past about my belief that the apostles were just like the Pharisees from the standpoint that they added their own human views to some of the Gospel.  I have used some examples of Paul in the past but here is one from Peter.

Here is what Peter said.

2 Peter 3:8-9(NKJV)
But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Really???  Does God want everyone saved?  Can Peter back that up with Scripture?  The reason I ask is here is what Jesus said on why He spoke in parables.

Mark 4:10-12(NKJV)
But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable.
And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables,
so that      ‘Seeing they may see and not perceive,     And hearing they may hear and not understand;     Lest they should turn,     And their sins be forgiven them.’”

And lest you think this is a mistake, here is what Jesus said in Matthew.

Matthew 13:11-15(NKJV)
He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.
For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:      ‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,     And seeing you will see and not perceive;
For the hearts of this people have grown dull.     Their ears are hard of hearing,     And their eyes they have closed,     Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,     Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,      So that I should heal them.’

So on the one hand we have Peter saying that God wants all people saved and that He doesn't want any to perish.

On the other hand you have Jesus twice explaining that the very reason He purposely speaks in parables is so that some will not understand and be saved!

Now let's view this in light of one of my guiding principles of Bible study.  That principle is God and Jesus are always in agreement.  As Jesus Himself said, "a house divided against itself cannot stand.".

So who you going to believe?  Peter or Jesus?  Based on the principle above I choose to believe Jesus on this topic.  Now that raises some other interesting questions doesn't it?  Like how can a loving God not want everyone saved?  I personally have no problem reconciling that issue and I'll cover that in future blog posts.
