I agree with the
first part but really question the second part.
James 4:7-8(NKJV)
Therefore submit to
God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Draw near to God and
He will draw near to you. Cleanse your
hands, you sinners; and
purify your hearts, you double-minded.
I'm 100% on board
with this part. It's the next two verses
that I question.
James 4:9-10(NKJV)
Lament and mourn and weep!
Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
Humble yourselves in
the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
Do you really think
we need to go God as sniveling, weak, gloomy and unhappy people in order for
Him to lift us up? Seriously? How in the world does that demonstrate faith? In fact it flies directly in the face of one
of my foundational verses.
Romans 5:3-5(NKJV)
And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation
produces perseverance;
and perseverance,
character; and character, hope.
Now hope does not
disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the
Holy Spirit who was given to us.
God's first rule of
success is glory in your tribulations (have a great attitude). How does lamenting and being gloomy even come
close to "glorying in our tribulations"?
In addition we have this advice from Paul.
In addition we have this advice from Paul.
Ephesians 3:11-12(NKJV)
according to the
eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,
in whom we have boldness and access with
confidence through faith in Him.
Again how does
lamenting, whining, and being gloomy demonstrate "boldness and
confidence" through faith in Christ?
And just to finish
off this topic.
2 Timothy 1:7(NKJV)
For God has not given us a
spirit of fear, but of power and of love
and of a sound mind.
As heirs in Christ I
just don't believe that God wants us to be little whiners for Him to help us
and that, at least to me, is what James is telling people to do.
